The Case for Replacing Gas / Oil with Infrared Heating

1. Infrared heating uses up to 50% less fossil fuels Infrared heating is produced by electricity. Currently in the UK some 50% of electricity is now being produced by renewables. That percentage will increase substantially over the next ten years as more and more wind farms become operational and even small nuclear generators come online. Fossil fuels will over time not be required. The more renewables we create will obviate the need for gas and oil.

2. Much less heating/energy is required. As infrared heating is instant heat there is no warm up period or cooling down period. Therefore, no waste of energy or cost. Infrared can be switched on as you enter the room and within minutes the heat will be felt. Once the infrared is turned on it will remain in the room for up to an hour afterwards. Infrared heat does not escape through doors, windows or walls.

3. The cost of buying infrared heating is so much lower. It is possible to buy enough infrared heating to heat an average home for around £2,500 against anything from £10,000 upwards for an air source heat pump. Infrared heating does also not require the best insulation costing further £thousands as it works very efficiently and effectively without insulation other than basic insulation.

4. The cost of using infrared heating is 70% less than gas/oil/ heat pumps. We have over the last two Winters heated 80 square metres of an uninsulated property in the middle of a large farm for between £410 and £440 a year. Saving on oil around £1,600 a year. Over two years £3,200.

5. Infrared heating stops/eradicates Fuel Poverty. As you will see from the above figures the cost of heating an average home works out at an average of £8 a week over a 52-week year. That outlay should be well within the means of 95% of UK residents. Currently according to whichever official figures, you look at some 50% of UK residents are not able to heat their homes. Even those on medium incomes who I have met could not afford to heat their homes. Infrared heating will stop that ridiculous situation in future years

6. Infrared heating stops/eradicates damp and mould. Some 37% of properties at the last count had some form of damp and mould. It is a hugely damaging life experience to live in damp and mould. Infrared heating will not allow damp and mould because it heats the surfaces of the room, particularly the walls where damp and mould form. Infrared will not only provide brilliant heat it will provide also an antidote to damp and mould.

7. Infrared heating can be bought one panel/one room at a time. When installing infrared, you do not have to install a whole system as with gas/oil/heat pumps. Depending on budget one panel can be bought to heat one room at a time. The base cost of a panel will be around £260 only. Most people it seems live most of their lives in one room, usually a kitchen/diner, so that is obviously the room to be heated first. Any size of room up to 24 square metres will require one panel only of up to 1000 watts.

8. Infrared heating installation requires one electrician only. It takes one electrician on average one hour to install one panel back to the consumer unit. So, eight panels eight hours. A days' work only for one person on a daily rate. The cost of installation is therefore hugely less than installing boilers/heat pumps, radiators, pipes etc. with many workers involved.

9. There is no physical disturbance of property or people when infrared heating is installed. When gas/oil boilers/heat pumps are installed, there is massive disturbance to both property and people. With the installation of infrared heating there is absolutely no disturbance to property or people.

10. There is no damage caused to property during installation. Contrary to when heat pumps are installed. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence of damage to property and carpets when heat pumps are installed. which is not surprising as floors have to be lifted for pipework.

11. The heat provided by infrared is radiant heat similar to the Sun. It is superior heat to convection heat provided through radiators from boilers/heat pumps. It does not escape through walls, windows or doors as does convection heat. It provides a far better ambient, comfortable heat across the whole room.

12. We can provide an 8-year Warranty although the life span of our infrared panels is up to 40 years.

13. There are absolutely no downsides with infrared as there are with heat pumps. Everything works without any problems. Always sufficient heat being generated or provided even when the temperature drops below 0C. Our infrared works down to -40C.

To order Infrared panels from IRG all you need to provide are the sizes of the rooms to be heated. We will provide you with a free, no obligation specification of the number of infrared panels and wattage required, including the heater controls of your choice.
